Aboriginal Leadership Opportunity Year (ALOY)

The Aboriginal Leadership Opportunity Year (ALOY) is a one-year program offered through the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). It is a highly positive, productive educational and leadership experience for Aboriginal youth. You have the opportunity to develop an individual learning plan comprised of non-credit preparatory courses with individual or small group tutorials and first-year university courses. The ALOY program will include sports, field trips, leadership development, military training and cultural support activities.

Aboriginal Training Program in Museum Practices

This program provides Aboriginal people with professional and technical training in museum practices, as well as internship opportunities at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Apprenticeship Grants

Apprenticeship grants are designed to make a career in the trades an attractive choice and encourage more apprentices to complete their training. Eligible apprentices could receive up to $4,000, which can be used to pay for tuition, travel, tools, or other expenses.

Career Transition Services

This program helps Regular Force members, as well as some members of the Reserve Force, get practical help finding a job.

Destination Clic

The Destination Clic program offers bursaries to Canadian francophone students who reside in a province or territory other than Quebec to participate in a three-week intensive language-learning course in French at accredited institutions.

EDC International Business Scholarships

EDC awards up to 30 scholarships annually, 25 of which go to undergraduate university or college students interested in pursuing a career or furthering their studies in international business, with up to 5 additional scholarships for students in programs which combine business with environmental or sustainability studies. An EDC scholarship is worth a $4,000 cash award. Scholarships will be awarded in spring and issued in autumn at the start of the academic year.

Explore Program

The Explore program offers bursaries to Canadian students so that they can participate in intensive five-week language-learning courses in English or French at accredited institutions across Canada.

First Nations and Inuit Summer Work Experience Program

The First Nations and Inuit Summer Work Experience Program provides youth with opportunities for summer employment, so that they can gain work experience, and develop or enhance essential employability skills—the critical skills needed in the workplace, such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork. In addition, these summer work placements allow youth to learn about career options and to earn income that may contribute to university or college education.

Housing Internship Initiative for First Nations and Inuit Youth (HIIFNIY)

This youth employment initiative provides work experience and on-the-job training for First Nations and Inuit youth to assist them in pursuing long-term employment in the housing industry. Housing Internships are available to First Nations and Inuit youth who have an eligible sponsor. The key requirement for this program is that the work experience and on-the-job training must be related to housing activities, such as but not limited to: housing administration, construction, renovation, maintenance and client counseling.

International Aboriginal Youth Internships Initiative

The International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative provides opportunities for Aboriginal youth to participate in international internships in developing countries.

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program

The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program provides free basic French and English language courses to adult permanent residents, refugees and protected persons.The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program provides free basic French and English language courses to adult permanent residents, refugees and protected persons.

NRC Co-op Program

The National Research Council Co-op Program offers work terms to post-secondary students so that they can acquire practical and professional work experience.

Odyssey - Full-Time Language Assistant Program

This program provides post-secondary students with the opportunity to work as full-time language assistants in educational settings across Canada.

Office of Literacy and Essential Skills

The Office of Literacy and Essential Skills provides information and free resources to help improve the literacy and essential skills of adult Canadians.

Skills Link

Skills Link helps youth facing employment barriers to improve their employability. The program offers participants assessments for implementing an action plan that will help them obtain and keep the type of employment they are seeking or return to school.

Summer Training Programs

The Canadian Forces offers three Summer Training Programs that combine military lifestyle with cultural awareness: Bold Eagle, Raven and Black Bear. These six-week long programs give you a taste of military training with the option - but no commitment - to join the Canadian Forces. The training is based on the Army Reserve Basic Military Qualification and is taught by military instructors. Subjects include General Military Knowledge, Weapons Handling, Navigation, First Aid, Drill, and Survival Skills.

Undergraduate Student Research Awards Program

Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are meant to stimulate your interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage you to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields. If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these awards can provide you with financial support through your host university. NSERC encourages qualified Aboriginal students to apply to this program.
