Allowance for the Survivor

This program provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to low-income widows who are not yet eligible for the Old Age Security pension.

Allowance Program

Allowance is a monthly benefit for low-income seniors (aged 60-64) whose spouse or common-law partner is eligible for, or currently receiving, the Old Age Security (OAS) pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS).

Additional Information

• Apply up to 12 months before your 60th birthday.
• If you have already reached the age of 60, send your application as soon as possible.
  

Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Retirement Pension

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Retirement Pension provides a monthly taxable benefit to retired contributors.

Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)

This program provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to low-income Old Age Security recipients.

To be eligible, you must also be receiving

Home Care

This program provides services to Nova Scotians who require care in their homes and communities to help them remain as independent as possible as long as possible.

International Benefits

The International Benefits program may provide retirement, disability or survivor benefits to eligible individuals who have lived or worked in another country, or the surviving spouse, common-law partner or children of eligible individuals who have lived or worked in another country.

Old Age Security (OAS)

This pension provides a monthly taxable benefit to persons 65 years of age and over.

Parent Apartment Program

This program provides low-interest loans to enable homeowners to adapt or build an addition to their single-family dwelling to accommodate an aging family member.

Personal Alert Assistance Program

This program provides financial assistance to low income seniors who live alone, receive publicly funded home care services, have experienced recent falls, and use a cane, walker or wheelchair. The program provides up to $480/year to reimburse approved seniors for the purchase of a personal alert assistance service.

Property Tax Rebate Program

This program provides seniors with a rebate of a portion of the municipal property taxes paid for the previous year.

Public Housing for Seniors

This program is designed to provide adequate, affordable rental housing to low income seniors (58 or over). Residents are charged rent based upon income.

Senior Citizens Assistance Program

This program provides assistance to senior citizens who wish to remain in their own homes but who cannot afford to carry out necessary repairs.
